Canadian Immigration Plan Seeks 1.1 Million Newcomers
On March 10, 2020, Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino unveiled the new three-year plan for immigration to Canada which includes the goal to grant permanent resident status to more than 1.1 million foreign nationals between 2020 and 2022.
The overwhelming majority of these new Canadian permanent residents will be skilled foreign workers (“economic immigrants”) and their family members.
It is forecast that around 9 million Canadians will be retiring this decade, so more skilled foreign workers are needed to help fill those positions as well as new jobs in Canada that will be added to the economy over the next 10 years.
The new multi-year Canadian immigration plan seeks to grant permanent resident status to 341,000 immigrants in 2020, increasing to 351,000 during 2021 and rising even further to 361,000 by the end of 2022.
These annual targets planned for immigration to Canada are substantially higher than in the recent past, when the yearly goal for Canadian immigration was set at 300,000.
In 2019, there were 341,180 immigrants who were approved to move to Canada as new permanent residents, which was significantly more than the annual goal of 330,000 planned for that year.
During a recent interview with a Toronto newspaper, Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino stated that most of the people living in Canada support immigration, which he views as positive for the country and its economy, and he also declared, “It’s vitally important that we continue to leverage immigration as a way of creating economic opportunity and growth.”
While many countries have been trying to reduce immigration levels, the long-term Canadian trend has been to substantially increase the number of individuals and families welcomed to move to Canada, where they receive positive support and are viewed as important contributors to the country, its economy and society.
